CHAP - Other Areas Beware

The draft plan isn’t just going to impact the open beach areas – it also says low lying areas beyond the coastal stretch are subject to more risk in the future from rising sea levels, potentially penalising thousands more homeowners and exposing ratepayers to hundreds of millions of dollars in compensation payments.

On the eastern beaches, Council proposes little, if any, actual beach protection and says there is less than a 1% chance of significant impact from erosion - yet they want to impose immediate, heavy handed planning restrictions on private home use and improvements. For homes further inland and along waterways, Council says there is an intolerable risk of future impacts from rising sea levels.

We want to see a sensible process put in place to monitor the impacts of global warming and practical action taken NOW to protect our coastline – not just a hit to homeowners though more costs and red tape.

We all need to work together to ensure a better, more consultative and realistic plan is put in place.
